Educators demonstrate a broad knowledge base and an understanding of areas they teach.
During my practicums, whether it was grade 2 or grade 6/7 I always made an effort to research anything that I was teaching. I wanted to be prepared when students asked questions about the topic so I could answer and keep the discussion going. However, I do recognize that I will not be able to learn everything and part of my learning will come from learning with my students. When learning about the brain, students had amazing questions that would most likely stump a professor teaching psychology. I was not afraid to say, “I’m not sure, but lets find out.” Then as a class we were able to research and find answers to these amazing questions asked by the students. I think it is important to demonstrate to students that we do not have all the answers but we can investigate together as a class.
